Skin Type

Using this guideline identify your skin type.

  • Well-balanced

    • Fine pores.
    • Good blood circulation. 
    • Smooth texture.
    • Blemish free.
    • Not prone to sensitivity.

    Combination

    • Skin type varies in the        T-Zone in comparison to the cheeks.
    • Oily T-Zone (Forehead, chin, nose.)
    • Enlarged pores with frequent or infrequent impurities i.e. black/white heads.
    • Skin type on cheeks classified as normal or dry.
    • Oilier parts of the combination skin are due to over production of sebum. The drier parts of the combination skin types are due to sebum and lipid deficiency.

    OILY

    • Heightened sebum production. Caused by genetics, hormonal changes, medication, stress, comedogenic product use.
    • Enlarged pores.
    • Glossy/shiny especially on the T-Zone.
    • Thicker, pale skin, blood vessels may not be visible.
    • Mild cases - Comedones which are black heads and whiteheads.
    • In Moderate and Severe bumps with no visible black or white head form. Other characteristics are medium sized bumps with noticeable white or yellow centers which appear. Skin becomes red and inflamed.
    • Oily skin is different to problem skin but the treatment thereof is similar.

    Dry/Sensitive

    • Produces less sebum than normal skin. Barrier function is compromised.
    • Loss of elasticity (feeling of tightness).
    • Skin texture is rough, possible blotchiness or dull looking.
    • Skin shows signs of premature ageing.
    • Scaling/ flakiness in patches but not always.
    • Sensitive skin experience symptoms such as: redness, rash, stinging, itching, and burning. Sensitive skin is different to dry skin but the treatment thereof is similar.

    Skin concern indicated by a chronic inflammatory skin condition. 


    • Enlarged pores.
    • Glossy/shiny especially on the T-Zone.
    • Skin is sensitive to touch and appears red where there are pustules.
    • In Moderate and Severe cases papules (bumps with no visible black or white head) form as well as pustules (medium sized bumps with noticeable white or yellow centers) appear, skin becomes red and inflamed. 
    • Face and/or neck, shoulders, back, and chest.
    • Skin regenerates and sheds more rapidly.
    • Skin shows strong inflammatory response to irritants and bacteria.

    Pigmentation / Age Spots / Hyper Pigmentation / 

    Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

    • Flat, darkened patches of skin that vary in size, color and location.
    • Caused by - Most Common: sun exposure, hormone influence (pregnancy, birth control pills) and / or skin trauma. 
    • Caused by - Least Common: Auto immune and gastrointestinal diseases, metabolic disorders and vitamin deficiencies, hormone treatments, chemotherapy drugs, antibiotics, antimalarial drugs, anti-seizure drugs and other medication.

    Ageing

    • Loss of volume (sagging) and hydration.
    • Fine lines, wrinkles and deep wrinkles.
    • Loss of density or thickness
    • Skin color changes – pigmentation, loss of color or life

    Scarring

    • Scarring is classified as collagen fiber formation caused by a dermal damage response.
    • Scars form due to loss of skin integrity in the case of injuries, burns, surgery and other injuries where the dermis is affected.
    • Scars form when both the epidermis and the dermis are damaged and heals. Scars have a different texture in comparison to the skin around the healed area.
    • Fresh scars are usually pink/red in color and fades in time.
    • Scars do not contain sebaceous and sweat gland or hair follicles.
    • Scars are very well vascularized and innervated. 
    • Pain and sensitivity in the area is common.
