Attract water from the dermis below and helping to keep that water bound in the

stratum corneum.

Provide free radical defense: neutralize free radicals. They’re usually molecules that are reasonably stable with an unpaired electron, so once the free radical takes their electron, the chain reaction stops. Essentially, they’re like sacrificial shields that intercept the free radicals before they have a chance to react with important biological molecules.

Initiating the increase of epidermal proliferation leading to

1) epidermal thickening; 2) compaction of the stratum corneum; and 3) biosynthesis and deposition of Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) cells that regulate the action of proteins essential to bone and skin regeneration. GAGs sells job is to maintain and support collagen, elastin and turgidity (bounce) in the cellular spaces and keep protein fibers in balance and proportion. It also promotes the ability of the collagen and elastin fibers to retain moisture, therefore remaining soluble. In skin care products, they are essential to the epidermal & dermal cells metabolism and keeping the collagen and elastin of the skin in good condition.

Dissolving bonds that hold dead skin together which in turn normalizes cell turnover in the epidermis. This stimulates the formation of normal healthy skin, which includes a

sloughing of the Stratum Corneum, a decreased formation of dry scales on the skin’s surface and stimulation of the cell cycle.

Normalizing/ inhibiting melanocyte activity - Interruption of the enzyme ‘Tyrosinase’ which assists in oxidizing the amino acid ‘Tyrosine’ which is needed to form melanin in the melanosome.

Blocking of inflammatory mediators produced by the skin and immune cells which in turn alleviates or improves pigmentation, acne, fights tissue destruction.

Creating a controlled wound i.e a mild burn Bonds between cells are dissolved and epidermal cells begin to shed more rapidly. New tissue is created and damaged tissue is quickly replaced. The shedding of skin cells send signals for more cell division.


This process stimulates the fibroblasts wound healing activity, the proliferation of fibroblast activity increases collagen and elastin. The wound healing process is what causes improvement in skin condition and appearance.
